My mother is my life and my best friend because she is an excellent role model. She is a brave woman to come to New York and be independent, when she was only 14. Her parents were separated before she was born, so she grew up with her grandparents on Misquitepec Acatlan de Osorio, Mexico. Her mother, my grandmother, needed to come to New York, so they could have money to eat. My grandmother came here to New York in order to send back money to Mexico. Something that many immigrants do when they grow up in poverty-stricken areas. The story of my mother’s life is inspirational and makes me realize how fortunate I am.  I am grateful to her and my grandparents for moving here and giving me the opportunity of being born in New York.

It is important to find out what lifestyle your ancestors lived. So every year in the summer, my family goes on vacation to Mexico. My parents, my brother and I do not like the pueblo, but we go to see our great-grandmother. The pueblo is nothing like the city. Everyday commodities that we take for granted in the Bronx are not present in the pueblo. It rains almost all the time, which causes the electricity to go off. There is no cable to watch T.V. On the streets there seems to be more animals than people walking around.  They are poor because you do not get to see furniture like New York.  They are not organized with their things. Their houses are not as clean as the city because animals go inside the homes. Poverty is present in all aspects of life in the pueblo.

In the pueblos in Mexico, you also see many people that are old, sick and dying. Sometimes, people do not have money to go to the hospital. There are different pueblos, so they go to Acatlan and go see a doctor. The doctors are not as good as New York or in Mexico City, the capital. On other hand, doctors do not know what is wrong with the patient. That is why people go to Mexico City to go and check up with a doctor. People says that they are better doctors in Mexico City because in the pueblo is just a small place and only one doctor. Sadly, people are so poor that they do not get to travel to find a good doctor and that is why they are dying.

In the pueblo, you can even lose your life. Two years ago, we were in my grandma’s house, we have come from eating tacos at night. When the lights are off the scorpions comes out. I was wearing a blue jean and a yellow shirt even though is it was too hot, I did not want to get a tan. Then the scorpion was walking over my jeans, but my grandma saw the scorpion and she told me “don’t move “. I thought she was playing, so I started moving the she killed it. She saves my life!

Going to Mexico makes me feel how lucky I am to have been born here. It makes me feel lucky because I have warm water to take a bath. I have many supplies to go to school to use them. Furthermore, I do not pay textbooks to use them in school only if I damaged it. I am lucky to be born here because I have free food and in Mexico, you get to buy or bring from home. If you do not bring money or bring food then you do not eat anything .Another reason, I am lucky to be born on the United States is because I have good teachers. For example, teachers in Mexico do not know how to teach English or how to speak and write proper English. Mexico don’t teaches Therefore, my mother’s Mexican heritage inspires me to appreciate what I have and donate to others who do not have much. Moreover, my mom affects my life by showing me how to appreciate everything, regardless of what it costs. What matters is people giving it to you by heart.
